    That's really helpful, I didn't know that. Once they are in they become a permanent feature then? Hmm in that case do you have any advice to making do with what we've got? :-/. Thanks again

    OK.. the fire is probably long down the line and not guaranteed, if that's a hurdle lets remove that. If someone has any ideas on how neaten the inside and neaten where the brick meets the plaster, would be much appreciated

    That's exactly it, a marble insert went in there originally. It's how to fill that space and also blend in with the brickwork

    It's not the wall it seems the outer legs of the fire surround are 20cm and the inner side of the legs are 17cm. I've seen this with other surrounds before and don't really know how to neaten the gaps. Also where the brickwork meets with the plaster it looks quite messy, anyone any ideas how...
