FYI This is no longer the case, BAL recommend cement based boards don't need tanking, they are either water resistant (Hardiebacker) or waterproof (Kerdi-Wedi). However joints and tray overlaps still need tanking tape. Gaz

Paula, Just 1 word of warning ref re-tiling your floor, you will have a single layer of plywood and not a plywood overlay of existing timber layer. Therefore standard cement based flexible adhesives (Class C1 or C2) are not suitable without additional 15mm ply overlay. The best choice...

Ideally it should be totally removed , heed not to use any solvents to remove it as they may then react with the tile adhesive and cause failure. Gaz

White star is a D2 class of adhesive, we do not recommend fixing a tile any larger than 300x300mm with any dispersal adhesive (tubbed,ready mixed), nor do we recommend them for porcelain. Gaz

Good advice Richard, do not tile to base coat plasters ie: Browning or Bonding coat, they are way too unstable even when primed. Either skim over with finish plaster and tile, or mechanically fix (screws) a cement based backer board and then tile. Gaz
