Ok terry you have a lot more knowledge about this than me , wouldnt that give me an accurate reading for the yellow wire to see if its live when it’s switched on and dead when its switched off or is that just me being nieve?

Oh ok i have not noticed that but there is some tape higher up the wire so it could be in there , what i will do when i get home is check that yellow wire to see if that is the switched live im sure it must be
That’s brilliant thanks for the help , I think the yellow is an earth wire but it has been used for the switched live because you can see the wiring on the old fan when I took that down the yellow wire was connected to one of them in the block and none of those are earth ?
Yes that’s correct, so do i need to put the yellow switched live to the live terminal and the permanent live red wire to the block with nothing connected to it ?
