How to connect Bathroom extractor fan

Please take this advice.

Not one of those screwdrivers is it ? If so bin it , they are not reliable .You need a multimeter or a twin probe voltage tester ,minimally ,to do safe testing on live circuitry.

Look at these screen shots from this VIDIO
With both sockets switched ON the detector finds the Earth is Live, but with only the socket being tested switch ON the Earth on that socket is no longer Live.

Hi terry all working now but you can see that they had used the earth wire for the live switch

The yellow is not an earth wire - especially if used as a switched live.

Any wire - except the bare wire in T&E - can be used for any purpose if properly identified.

It just seemed strange it was a thick copper wore not thin strands ?

Was there a bare copper conductor in the outer sheath ,or didn't you look? The red and blue insulated conductors ,are they not rigid copper on the supply cable ?

A typical timer fan cable;
Red - permanent live
Yellow - switched live
Blue - neutral
Bare copper wire - earth. This gets sleeved with green and yellow sleeving usually. Most if not all bathroom fans do not need an earth connection, so this wire either gets terminated in a seperate terminal block, or - wrongly - gets cut off.
