I don't know how accurate my measurement was with a thermometer held against the pipe, but I do know the family have complained that the tap water is too hot. Since this thermostat is not up the the latest safety standard, I'll be replacing it anyway. Thanks everyone for your advice.

Is there a delay if it's on part alarm? If someone had broken into that room while we were asleep I'd want it to full alarm right away.

Yes, that did the job. Levered the bottom edge out over the peg. Now I can paint right up to the inside frame. Neater than using masking tape. Thanks again.

Thank you all. That photo in #7 is it. I had tried pushing into that hole but nothing moved. I'll have a go at levering the frame up when I get home and report back.
