Thanks Foxhole...can you recommend any particular brand?

Hi Can anyone help? We are currently restoring a pitch pine staircase/banister. The wood itself is in very good condition and we have sanded back the old flaking varnish very well. We are not sure though which finish to apply. Should we go for a varnish/oil or something else? Thanks
