After switching off the mains today, turning it back on brought the tamper alarm on, but the usual code didn't work to reset it. Bringing it into engineer mode didn't work either. So the only way to quieten the alarm is to switch off the mains again, and wait for the quieter, high-pitch alarm...

Thanks for your replies. In that case, the engineer may not be 100% correct in saying that only after fitting a new gas valve (and then not being able to return it) would he be able to deduct whether it was that or the PCB?

The boiler is filling up the unvented cylinder with hot water as it should but the hot taps and showers have increased in pressure and only release cold water (maybe a dash of hot water blended in). Intriguingly, when a particular hot tap that is near to the tank is opened (I haven't tested yet...
