Just to follow this up. The actual issue was that I wasn't using alkaline batteries when trying new ones. I tried new ones and the thermostat starting working again.

Yeah, I will double-check with another pair of batteries to make sure and agree about Salus. Horrible to use and now this!

Thanks Ian. I've set it to manual and the heaters are warming up which is good. I've just tried the reset button on the thermostat but no joy.
