    Electric UFH melted

Recently bought this house which has electric underfloor mats downstairs. Been using them all without any problem. Noticed that the engineered wood floor in the lounge had a bit of a dip in it, so I pulled up the floor thinking I'd probably find a failed joist. However the dip was caused by the...

    Towel rail off primaries

Funny thing is, I can't find a pump anywhere. The UFH has one but that just circulates water through the flooring coils. The boiler is a Viessmann VITODENS 100-W (link). Looking at the brochure I think I'm safe to say the pump is within the boiler, and therefore I can take the feed off anywhere...

Drill dead straight into oak end grain

When it's sunny, we wouldn't want a roof. When it's not sunny, we wouldn't be outside! They do make a gazebo version with nice cedar roof though. Good excuse to build another one

Drill dead straight into oak end grain

Thought I'd follow up on this for anyone who tackles the same challenge. In the end I bought a drill jig but discovered on the day it didn't quite fit my drill! So the holes got drilled by hand and I had a second person stood to my side to ensure the drilling angle was about right. I had 20mm...

    Towel rail off primaries

We have an unvented system which has one big primary circuit with 3 zone values (DHW, CH and a separate underfloor heating loop). In an ideal world, I'd like the new towel rail to be gently warm when ANY of the 3 valves are active (lots in winter, just DHW in summer). Can I therefore tap the...

Sounds good - you don't have a photo of the cradle do you?

Yes I like the pegs sticking out, but each to their own. It is a good kit - they test assemble at the yard, then number the joints, dismantle and deliver. I am in no way affiliated

Genius! I didn't know these existed. This one looks even easier if it is rigid enough, would you agree?

Drill dead straight into oak end grain

This is the actual one we're building - I didn't use this photo because it isn't mounted on pins. There is no chance of this blowing anywhere - the cross sections are 110kg each alone. That said, having it on pins will mean it can't shift to the side as the oak weathers

It's 1.6 ton! And actually mine is a pergola so is the same as the photo but without the pitched roof

Drill dead straight into oak end grain

Interesting idea. I went with the pins option because the oak supplier recommended it, and because it will provide some slight stability whilst we are building it. The pins are 20mm so if I made the holes 25mm or so, it would presumably remove this risk and also mean it's less essential I get a...

Drill dead straight into oak end grain

I do have a router, not a fancy one but it has been fine on oak before. I've never used it to get that depth though (about 9cm) - fit extensions?

Drill dead straight into oak end grain

I am about to erect something very similar to this: The bottom of the oak legs will sit on a stainless steel pin, which is concreted into the ground, with about 10cm sticking up. There will be a 1cm or so gap between ground and timber to keep the legs from standing in water. I'm wondering...

    Connecting to water mains

Yes 32mm seems to be the way to go. I am hoping to replace our boiler with an unvented mains pressure one soon, so was keen to get the maximum flow rate for the showers. The fitting is surprisingly solid. It has 3 metal teeth inside which sink into the outer surface of the pipe when you tighten...

    Connecting to water mains

Right I thought I'd post the results for anyone attempting the same job. I ended up getting the Plasson Plass4 universal coupling because a local plumbers merchant had them. They didn't have the elbow version so I had to go for a straight connection. Firstly I cleaned up the pipe with a wire...
