Yes you are right I kind of want both but I can work out the compromise between height and reach if I've got a good idea of the distance between me and the thing.

So the target is inclined ? Do these laser measures generally have an accurate laser dot or something so you know what part you are measuring to?

Thanks for the replys. Nothing that I can just stand in the garden with and point at the area I want to reach? It doesn't have to be strictly height that I'm measuring, just a linear distance between me and the thing I want to get to.

PaulNorris, a single phase motor is not that expensive and may be the right solution but this is a useful thing to know for me as i will probably be buying some other 3 phase kit soon like a power hacksaw and a planer thicknesser so i am now confident that i can run these things without the need...
