good advice from robbie but if the wall covering is vinyl then i would paste the wall with ready mix pva adhesive {not pva unibond b4 anyone has a go at me} then wipe the back of the paper with a wet sponge allow to rest and hang

By the way richard that was a good point u made about the paint absorbing and sticking to the plaster i wrote my article just explaining how to get a smooth finish but what you mentioned was equally important

when it comes to painting new plaster and the plasterer has been nice enough to have left you a nice flat smooth surface, then why not compliment the plaster with a top quality paint finish.
To do this we will need certain tools.

they wont take long to dry you will see them dry from dark brown and then light pink colour and all dark patches gone.

yes the way your plan to do it is good and if you want to get the ceiling extra smooth you can back roll coats 2 - 3 when your roller is exhausted of paint .
by back rolling areas while still wet with exhasted roller takes more of the stipple out

another way you could do it is by dusting off and slightly damping down the top of the plaster board and either put a few dollops of bonding plaster or expanding foam down and then drop down a piece of plasterboard on top and allow to set. then fill the hole underneath with either bonding...
