Replacing a 47 year old CSU

Thank you sparkwright, you've been really helpful. We will check for all the things you've mentioned and replace any wiring that hasn't an earth conductor and I already have earth clamps, 16mm earth cable, and earth sheathing ready for that side of the remedial work. Cheers for the...

Replacing a 47 year old CSU

If all I'm going to get is sarcasm and patronisation I'll just take advice elsewhere. Like I say, my friend who has been a spark and is educated to 16th is of the opinion that we re-use the existing wiring given that it is in mint condition and I only came here to A) ensure the schedule...

Replacing a 47 year old CSU

Appreciate that but it isn't in the budget, besides which I have a qualified spark to help me (I say qualified, he is to 16th at any rate - he's insistent that we re-use the existing PVC which I'm in two minds about hence asking here :) )

paying the fee will never make anybody 'safe', only competence (and suitable tools and test equipment) will do this. What testing equipment do you have and do you know how to use it? Yeah, I knew this choice of words would come back on me. My correct choice would be "legal" not "safe"...

Replacing a 47 year old CSU

I've just bought a house built in 1965; everything is original. Well preserved, but nevertheless, has to go :P Currently the property has a 60A supply and three circuits - Cooker, Ring, Lights. This is on an old wood-backed Wylex wire fuse CSU. Now, I'm not a qualified sparkie but I want...

    Buying house - rewiring query

We'll see. If the existing lighting and ring main is undamaged and 16th ed T&E of the correct gauge then I see no reasonable point replacing it. Of course if it's twin no earth as you suggest then absolutely, rip out and replace

    Buying house - rewiring query

I have the opportunity to buy a property built in 1965 for a very good price. The internals / decor are all original but at least it's all been given uPVC double glazing and re-clad in PVC recently (is a concrete crosswall construction, the front was originally timber clad). I'm...

Economy 7 Off Peak WELL before 11!?

It isn't clear in the pic but the arrow is in a little square opening in the faceplate, like the date ticker on the face of an analogue wristwatch, so I would assume it moves!

Economy 7 Off Peak WELL before 11!?

Fair enough. Still, I'm happy, as long as the teleswitch isn't turning the night stores on, but leaving the meter on Peak Rate. This is what I was worried about, the nigh store circuit being switched on at 5, but the meter not being rate switched until 11! Although from the pic I see...

Economy 7 Off Peak WELL before 11!?

Just had a look It's a radio teleswitch, not a timed switch, so no timer to go out of sync, correct? Also, I've only experienced the cut in power once so it may have been a coincidence. Is it possible for a radio teleswitch to switch at the wrong time for any reason?

Economy 7 Off Peak WELL before 11!?

Hope someone can advise! Moved into our flat about six weeks ago, we have night storage heating and an Economy 7 tariff. Two strange things are happening: 1. At about 5PM each day, the heating comes on and stays on until we call it a night until whatever hour in the morning. 2. When...

    Rising Damp? Rotting wall? Help!

I'm sure there have been worse DIY disasters out there but I nonetheless have a problem I don't know how to fix. I don't really consider myself a proper DIYer, more of a novice in this field. I'm more into the technical side of things; when it comes to wiring / telecommunications / IT I can...
