Hi Everyone!
Just thought I'd post an update to let you know the heating engineer came and it was the pump. It was blocked with gunge....he replaced it...and now the house is like a sauna...bliss!
Thank you all so much for your help, really appreciated.
Wishing you all a superb 2011!

hi spraggo,
I cannot access the rear of the pump as previously suggested, due to the location of the pump.
the system is a "closed" system as far as i know...there is a header tank in the loft which is full and the ball cock is not stuck.
The heating this end of the house is different in that...
Hi Spraggo!
Many thanks for your help and replies :-) no, I do not use the boiler stat to control the heat, I leave the heating on permantently and use the room thermostat to control the heating...so I guess that is not the problem?

Thank you all for your help, but it you are right, it will require a professional. I was, of course, trying to rememdy the situation myself as there is no chance of getting anyone to sort this out before the new year...thankfully we do have a wood burner in one room so we won't freeze to death...
Please no! You are not wasting your time...I AM learning...on a need to know basis, plumbing and heating are really my forte! Maybe I should have pretended I was a man :-(
Thanks so much for all the help guys...really appreciated :-) would definitely try your remedy, but simply cannot get to the back of the damn pump...it has been built (along with the boiler) into a rather tight spot in a brick shed and is pretty tight up against a wall so I can't access the...
hi again,
thank you for that info, much appreciated :-)
I did hear a definite change of tone when I turned the pump to a different setting, it got louder and the whiring was faster when it was turned from no 1 to no 3 setting (which is what it currently set at). surely if the pump is not...
hi!
thank you for your response :-)
Motorised valve, heating circuit, swarf? It's all chinese to me I'm afraid....being a woman and all that! ;-)
We have 2 separate systems in the house, one each end, the other end works fantasically! (but the pump is indoors down that end of the...
Hi,
thank you for such a fast response! The pump is switched on fully and yes I think the valves are both open, no-one has touched it since last year when it was working fine. At least we now know what the problem is...not sure why the plummer couldn't figure it out?
Can you tell me how...
hi,
Hoping someone can help as I waited 10 days for a plumber who justleft and says he doesn't know what the problem is!
We have an oil fired central heating system, it does not heat the water, just the rads (of which there are 16) We have an aga which heats the water. When we switch on...
hi,
many thanks for your replies :-)
But I doubt the pump is the problem...as I have now removed the radiator thermostats in one room and those rads are now scorching! but the rest unfortunately are freezing! Boiler is still only coming on for about 5 mins each time.
Boiler is only 3 years...
hi all,
I'm tearing my hair out with my oil fired heating system!
Worked fine till this week when it has been very very cold outside. The boiler is only coming on for about 5 minutes so only the rads nearest to it are getting warm before the boiler shuts down again...Grrrrr
Could it be a...
