  • Hello everyone out there - hopefully someone who can help me with my 'turning coalshed into beautiful utility room' project!
Built in 1970,the original coalshed is 5 foot from my back door and the gap between the house and brick built shed has been filled in with a manky door and side panel, the whole covered by a corrugated asbestos pitched roof. There is a single skin party wall shared with next door. My immediate problem is one of support across 2m width of the structure. At the moment there is a 100mm x 65mm concrete lintel resting on the outside single brick wall, in the centre on a single brick column (crumbling at the base) and appears to be floating in mid air at the end adjoining next door, and also cracked across the bottom corner 8mm from the end!! Resting on the lintel are 3 courses of brick which support 2 joists running the length of the structure, which in turn hold up the roof. The roof is supported along the length of the outside wall by a joist on top of the brick. I would obviously like to get rid of the brick pier in the middle and am confused as to what king of lintel to use and how thick. Also, is the width one brick sufficient for it to rest on? Next door have done this job alreadyand I wouldn't be surprised if his lintel is resting on the inside brick where I should be putting mine ???

Thought this was going to be a doddle! How wrong as usual with any diy !!!!

Thanks in advance for any help!
