    Yep i now realise that, after a toilet-flush the valve is still dripping long after it should be. I can't seem to adjust the contraption to close the valve. I think the valve must be knackered because even i move the ballcock to close the valve it's still dripping. . On the modern ones you can...

    so that photo i took earlier (as shown) was a low water- level moment. Maybe it's only after i flush chain that it slowly rises?

    That silver hook, has it fallen off?. Maybe that's affecting the water level?

    Water is dripping from the pipe at the right side of the cistern.....a not very frequent drip. Not the side where water enters but the other side. Have sued builders' silicon sealant but it's still dripping. Any ideas?

    Really? There are no radiators near it which is what I emphasised in my OP. Now if my stop-tap was near a radiator in a bedroom then yeah i understand your point...but as you can now see ,it isn't ,it's in a cupboard in the hall....freezing cold

    yes but no radiator there. Its by the front door. I've only had a boiler since last winter. |Before that the pipes would freeze every winter when we had a couple of days of sub zero temperatures
