Finally got the service engineer out to fix this. The motherboard had blown (part known as an xbox apparently). As it was made by a now bankrupt factory it's no longer available. So new oven required. It was pretty rubbish anyway so it's not such bad news.

ok, so the Mrs's is bored of using just the top oven now. Do you think replacing the main element will work? are the service plan people any good/trustworthy for fixing oven? bit torn between getting it fixed of putting that money towards a new one.
