Hi all, the wooden lintel above the window in the pic was water damaged (long since dry) so I have removed the paint and cleaned. A few areas need wood filling but there are two things I don’t know how to do before redecorating:
1 The narrow facing edge needs to come up flush with the painted...
Cheers scbk. I think my main concern is water getting in around the screw holes and discolouring the poly flutes inside. The fancy big ones are (over?)engineered to prevent that.
Hi all, I want to top my new cold frame with 10mm twin wall polycarbonate, which will be screwed to a wood frame to form the lid.
To attach poly to frame I bought the fancy cushioned button fixings (left of pic 1) but they are expensive monsters at 40mm wide and need wider lid timber than is...
Ah, thanks - I’d misread and thought you were talking about putting the chain support mechanism on the outside rather than the hinges. One day I’ll do the proper recess thing but as you say, for this project it doesn’t matter if there’s a gap.
Very useful, thanks @conny. I’ll trial and error before final fixing as you say. While I’ve got you, no-one has been able to explain the difference between the two butt hinge positionings shown - any thoughts? They would both seem to open a lid to the same extent. I guess the ‘inner sandwiched’...
@JohnD Okay, cheers. Guessing T hinges spread the stress and are stronger so I’ll look at them.
@foxhole Great, thanks for the suggestions. I like the second idea but not sure why you’d crush a link to screw directly - to make the aperture more narrow so it doesn’t slip its screw?
Hi all
New to DIY but getting to grips with it thanks to Covid. I’ve built a leaf mould cage out of pallet wood and it’s time to attach the lid with butt hinges. But I don’t get the difference between the two hinge positionings in the pictures - down the back, or inside so to speak.
It will...
@conny Thanks again and yes, I’ll use a free-draining soil mix. Looks like I’ll be practising my brick laying and adding a soldier course atop. I’ll post a pic or two when it’s done.
Hi Conny
Thanks so much - so much useful info in one post! This got me thinking first:
“Putting flowers/plants in between could exacerbate this problem if they are strong root specimens that could potentially push the bricks out of position.”
- The plants will be very shallow rooted like...
Hi all, first post from a gardener turned novice DIYer. I’ve got an odd double wall set-up as per the first pic, an old brick wall on the right and a more modern wall on the left. Despite the rubbish pic, both are sturdy.
What I want to do is put some soil in the central void and plant in...
