Thanks, it's all up and running now the existing timer was overriding the hive so I've disconnected the old rotary timer and put the link wire in it's place so the power is always on to the Hive which is all connected up and working, even got it connected to my Amazon echo:D

Yes I did link the permanent line to common and do have a multimeter.
I'll get some better pictures later, one thing I was thinking is about the old rotary timer, should you disconnect it or just leave it switched to on.

OK finally got round to installing the Hive and wired up as in post 6 but the boiler doesn't fire up the heating when requested by the hive, I can see the hive looks ok as I can the boiler light coming on the hive device connected to the boiler, any ideas anyone.

I've now wired in the original water heater thermostat and it's working fine to automatically switch off the light at 40c (the upper limit), it is a bit slow at switching it back on as the temp needs to drop 6c before it switches it back on.

I won't be strapping the lightbulb directly to the stat as this be in a small enclosed incubator and when the temp rises it should switch off the lamp.
