    Brass to copper solder?

I have just done precisely that, four times, with no problem.

Non-setting adhesive to hold splashback to wall?

I'm fitting a large porcelain tile behind a small cloakroom washbasin as a splashback. Whoever fitted the previous similar setup smeared an unnecessarily huge amount of adhesive all over the back of the tile, too far in for me to cut through with a blade or multitool, with the result that I had...

    Shed Termination

Can't you strip a good bit - say 300mm or so - of the armour off the SWA, then just fix the SWA to an external box with a gland and feed the conductors straight through a hole drilled in the wall through the back of the box? No need for any joints in the external box and once you've got the...

    At last leaders with balls...

You obviously do not recall that it was mainly Bill Clinton's foot-dragging over Bosnia that hampered progress. The then Conservative UK government waffled and prevaricated endlessly, but no sensible Brit was under any delusion about the UK role: it was the US that really mattered. You may not...

The eternal question: Unvented cylinder or combi?

I am not a plumber but I doubt a combi would work well for a 4-person household with three bathrooms. The North London semi I bought in 2019 (from a 4-person household) had a loft conversion in 2014 making it a 4-bed from a 3. At the same time, the hot water system was converted to mains...

Can you buy Purdy soft paintbrushes

Purdy Syntox? Described as "Extra soft - Nylon/Chinex...Provides a mirror like finish". Got one a while ago for use with some Osmo oil but haven't used it yet.

How to air pressure test water pipes

On my rare forays into plumbing, I try to make up - usually by soldering - what I can best call sub-assemblies: sets of pipework having a number of joints, that are small enough overall to be tested for leakage in my car boot. Why? Because there I can join them with demountable pushfits onto...

Are Bosch D-tect scanners any good?

    Will check that out thanks

Are Bosch D-tect scanners any good?

Only a DIYer but I'd be prepared to pay up to the £300-or-so price of a D-tect 120, quite widely available, if they actually work as advertised Don't need the extra penetrating power of a D-tect 200 at more than double the cost. I have a Bosch DMF 10m Zoom which I regard as useless. Any opinions?

Cut into live mains cable with metal stanley knife..

DNO changed the service head, at their request, in my old house. Live, of course (no way to isolate without cutting power to the whole street). It was above head height. Mr DNO-man wore full overalls, full-face helmet, rubber boots, thick insulated gloves and stood on a wooden stepstool. I...

    Large Gap Between Extensions

Can't see a problem but you should remove all the old silicone (NB: not silicon) sealant before reinstating, as it seems silicone sealant sticks to everything except itself. Or you could use a non-silicone sealant, though I think you would still have to clean up first.

    Best oven door seals?

You may both be right but I don't know if genuine parts will last longer than pattern parts! A trial is in order.

    Best oven door seals?

I have an Ikea-badged twin oven which was in the house I bought 6 years ago. It is the same as numerous ovens badged as Electrolux, AEG, Zanussi or others. In 6 years I have needed four new top oven door seals and now the latest, only about 9 months old, has split. I have bought them mostly...
