    Cost of new purlin?

It does look shoddy doesn't it. I am not sure but the Strutural Surveyor thinks it must be replaced and I am no expert.

    Cost of new purlin?

Structural surveyor has said this needs replacing so looking to hear how much it would likely cost on this mid-terrace 1920s house in Exeter? Surveyor's informal summary: The purlin is a definite issue. The original purlin has split and deflected, and the splice strengthening is inadequate...

Soil pipe install (once asbestos is removed)

Hello I made another post about removing and then installing the asbestos soil pipe on our house. Having spoken to a few firms I can see that it is likely there would have to be a removal of the current pipe by one company and installation by another. Would someone be able to give a rough...

Asbestos Soil and Downpipe removal and replacement

Hello I have what I highly suspect to be an asbestos soil and downpipe which is now desperately in need of replacement (it is leaking and has a hole!). Question is whether this is a job for a plumber, gutter specialist or asbestos removal company? Does anyone know if you can get someone...

Are electric showers better than they used to be?

Thanks to you both, it seems it could be worth it. We're actually having an electrician visit for another issue so was tempted to get him to look at the shower as well and tell me what it could handle and how much it would cost to upgrade but didn't want to bother if it wouldn't be any better...

Are electric showers better than they used to be?

Hello, We currently have an electric shower which is at least 10 years old (perhaps longer) a Mira Sport which I am not sure on the power of. The thing is the flow is absolutely rubbish and so was wondering if we upgraded it to something newer and more powerful (I know this will require an...

Is this a tough job or could your average handyman do it?

Cheers, I will make sure I take this into account.

Is this a tough job or could your average handyman do it?

Thanks for letting me know. I did search those words or something ot that effect but actually it came up with a lot of bezels, hence my confusion. I have seen something called a c-kit which might work but not something that is obviously a downlight hole reducer.

Is this a tough job or could your average handyman do it?

When you mention a downlight conversion do you mean a bezel? Something like this...

Is this a tough job or could your average handyman do it?

Thanks to you all for the suggestions. I will look into the conversion kits for sure as that might be a simple solution. Steve I think I understand what you're saying but will have to think about it more as it does seem more complicated than my simple brain can manage, at least at this time of...

Is this a tough job or could your average handyman do it?

Hello, I recently had two downlights replaced but unfortunately they are a lot smaller than the ones in there previously. I wasn't too bothered by appearances initially but now that I can feel a draft coming through as well (roof of a single storey extension) I am starting to feel bothered by it...

Restoring wooden floorboards - what price would you expect?

Thanks to you both, doesn't sound like a decent option at this rate. Might have to go back to the idea of replacement carpet in that case.

Restoring wooden floorboards - what price would you expect?

Hello everyone. We have a couple of rooms with old carpet which have potentially nice looking floorboards underneath just waiting to be brought out into the open. One of the rooms the boards are quite black (see pic) and will need work whereas the other are just a little darker and...

Grout between tiles horrible, better to replace grout or go for new flooring (laminate)?

yes there are definitely a couple of cracked tiles but they aren't nearly as unsightly as the grout and so don't really bother us all that much. We have it in mind that we may want to sell sometime in the future so want it to look as good as possible for that, as well as for us in the meantime...

Grout between tiles horrible, better to replace grout or go for new flooring (laminate)?

Jeez you cut it all out with a stanley knife wow! I don't envy you for doing that, must have taken an age but yeah I guess the softness helped. This grout is as old as the hills and so is rock solid and really baked in! I'll take a look at wood as I didn't really think of that as an option and...
