    Removing beading from Upvc window

Ok, thanks, I'll give that a go. I'm now replacing a couple of other windows, so can practice removing a bead on them. I've talked to the manufacturer who made the window I'm replacing the bead on, and the profile is the same, so no problem there. :)

    Removing beading from Upvc window

Thanks for the video. I had already seen that one along with probably all the others on YouTube, but none of them mentions the glazing knife. Here's a pic (taken in poor light!) It looks like a chisel but is blunt at the sharp end. As one side is flat at the back and the other has a definite...

    Removing beading from Upvc window

I need to remove and replace a bottom piece of beading on one of my windows. The YouTube videos I've watched show that a long piece is removed first, making it easier to take out a short piece. However, I'm not sure which way around to use the glazing knife! The knife has a bevel edge on one...

    Stairs skirting board gap

I've come up with an alternative solution which shouldn't affect the stringer at all. The wall isn't quite straight. If I clad the door frame with 5mm timber, I can apply plasterboard (straight) and it will protrude just 2 or 3mm past the frame. I can then put a small rebate in the architrave...

    Stairs skirting board gap

Many thanks for the feedback and advice guys. I've taken it on board and I won't be removing the stringer above the tread. How about if I just reduce the thickness a bit as in the diagram below? The stringer would be full thickness for 9mm above the tread, then rebated 9mm. The stringer would...

    Stairs skirting board gap

Thanks for the pics and explanation. That's very helpful. Would it be possible to add back some strength to the stringers? I have access to underneath the stairs for those two steps. I can screw the stringer to the wall and make sure there is no movement possible. Or add in extra support...

    Stairs skirting board gap

Yes, you're right. The thickness is 27mm and the moulding is 18mm. You've got a good eye! Installation was at the end of 2019, and I think my memory of events is faulty. I've had a very close look and found one area where I can see that the tread goes into the side! So it does seem to be a...

    Stairs skirting board gap

I would be replacing the existing skirt on that portion of the stairs with a new piece that goes flush to the wall. The 10 mm gap disappears and the stair treads will be 10 mm wider than the staircase going up to the next floor. 10mm of the existing skirt will be visible, but it's all going to...

    Stairs skirting board gap

Yes, I was on site when it was fitted. I'll reach out to the mods and ask them to move the post. You say a multitool isn't the correct tool? Do you have an alternative tool in mind?

    Stairs skirting board gap

No, it's not the riser or stringer. I'm referring to the skirt board, like what this guy is talking about - It has no structural or load-bearing properties. I am thinking that a multitool may be my only option for removing a section unless there are other tools that I haven't thought of.

    Stairs skirting board gap

Unfortunately, that will give me a top edge of 16mm, compared to the rest of the skirting board that it connects to, which is 6mm. It would be transferring the problem from the bottom of the rail to the top. I'm going to remove it, and reposition it, but wondering if the multiTool is the best...

    Stairs skirting board gap

I have a renovation project on the go but have an issue with the stairs skirting board on the first two steps. I will be putting some decorative rail on all my skirting boards, and it will be stepped back a few millimetres. After plasterboarding and skimming the wall to be flush with the...

Measuring for replacement double glazing units

How bad can it get though, other than needing complete window replacement? I can't see what I've got to lose by at least giving it a go. :)

Measuring for replacement double glazing units

Cheers Ronnie, I have upvc frames and windows. I was thinking the same thing about some of the feedback. I try not to shy away from trying things because something "may" go wrong. The whole idea of DIY is to bring the cost down. If it goes pear shaped, I can always turn it over to someone...

Measuring for replacement double glazing units

Yes, I'd make sure any replacements could be made to the same specs before purchasing. I do enjoy the maintenance free life of Upvc. I'd rather spend around £50/£80 for a couple of replacement panels than replace the whole thing for £2000 or more if I can get away with it. :)
