    Reconnecting hallway light switch.

He had nothing to do with this other than open up the switch and check for shorts. I put it back together so either I caused the wire to drop out or the fault lies elsewhere. You’re probably wondering why I haven’t asked him to look at it again. He is away and now after reading this thread I...

    Reconnecting hallway light switch.

I’m not 100% any of the follow up questions right now as I can’t check the connections. My neighbour works for the council. He told me he can do work but someone else must sign it off. Maybe he isn’t qualified at all then. He has done lots of other work for me and has meters and knows how to...

    Reconnecting hallway light switch.

Hmm. Thanks everyone. It’s been like that for years, I helped my neighbour who is part qualified, unscrew the fittings so it must have always been partly like that. I screwed the cover back on. I’ll get the guy back in who sorted the original problem to sort this. At least then the hall light...

    Reconnecting hallway light switch.

Hello. Had some electrical issues recently that involved a check of all the light fittings. Since the work was completed the hall lights haven't worked and I think it's caused by a wire dropping out of the socket when it was checked. Left is to the front door hall light switch. Right goes...

Broken stopcock, pipes buried in kitchen

Ok it's a bit easier to explain everything now I'm at work, more chilled out and on a proper keyboard. It was actually my partner who broke the stopcock trying to turn the water off when our original upstairs leak started again. We were in the process of arranging for the pipes from the kitchen...

Broken stopcock, pipes buried in kitchen

Sorted now thanks. Other half found someone by searching for builder plumber and he came round and just got on with it. He would done the upstairs connection as well but found suspected asbestos so we have no upstairs water for now...but no leaks and neighbours are sorted phew.

Broken stopcock, pipes buried in kitchen

Ok just had the neighbours round and they are fine to manage until we get capped. The female part is where the stopcock screws in. The thread has gone. Yes, our house is 110 yrs old and the last time we had plumbing work done it was a struggle to open/close. Insurance will pay out it seems...

Broken stopcock, pipes buried in kitchen

We're off in the street and it is affecting us and one neighbour who are being great about it. Our stopcock was believed to be fine but the female fitting broke on Thursday when a plumber came to do some pipework. We're in touch with the insurance to sort out long term fix and repair of damage...

Broken stopcock, pipes buried in kitchen

Hi.currently have a nightmare on our hands. Broken stopcock and shared mains so our neighbours have no water. Nobody wants to touch the work and we're waiting for news from our insurance company. I'd like to block the water supply to our house without depriving neighbours of water. Could a...

Dining room bulbs keep taking out the main 5a fuse

OK thanks for further replies. Absolute Max wattage is 11x60 filament and 15w led downstairs. There's another 2x60w in the master bedroom and bottom of attic. There's a further 2x energy savers in the other bedroom and landing. Finally there are three strip lights in the attic. The bulbs in...

Dining room bulbs keep taking out the main 5a fuse

Hi. We have 5 light fittings downstairs. They are three bulb chandelier type in the living room and hall, four bulb in the dining room, a single bulb under the stairs and a three bulb IKEA one in the kitchen with low wattage (think they are led). When we have more than two bulbs in the dining...

Wiring a bathroon ceiling light, switch wire issue

Back again after trying to forget about this for a while. Can you suggest how I could follow the switch or do any further testing? I'm probably going to get someone in but it seems a shame to get this far then give up. Cheers.
