Thickness 30mm, width enough to drill screw so may be 25mm - 30mm or so should be sufficient.
Just checked battens most of them come in 25mm or 38mm thickness.
Did some search on Google, found piece of timber in the size I needed. They call it fence panel backrail. It's wider than I need so I'll cut it in half. I think it should fit for the purpose.

They look good in picture but not a feasible solution when you are replacing old fences in a typical garden surrounded by 6 neighbours. I was looking for fences which I could easily slot in. I couldn't find any local supplier, all I see are B&Qs, Wickes, TPs etc.
