Pick my wall height to tie in with existing flashing

Hi, I'm adding making my conservatory more permanent with addition of extra brickwork and a slate room. Keeping structure same size and shape as conservatory and utilising existing flashing that has been cut into the house. I've attached two pictures where my finger shows wall height and the...

External UVPC door fitting between angled walls

Hi, I'm converting a conservatory into a more permanent structure which involves replacing some glass walls with block and brick ones. I've not got professional plans drawn up, so will get measured for windows and doors once the bricky has finished. The shape of the building is "5 facet...

When does a conservatory become an extension? (and do I need building regs)

The new structure will be exactly the same dimensions as the old one and is within permitted development allowances so no need for planning or planning advice. As said, anything meaningful means £2k of plans needed..... As an FYI I asked my local authority building control for the 'first hour...

    Cavity closers under wall plate

Thanks, so no cavity closers at the top and wedge a celotex seal.

    Insulation upgrade for floor

Hi, I'm upgrading a 27 year old conservatory to a more permanent structure. The current chipboard floor has some water damage which needs replacing so whilst I'm at it questioning whether worth replacing the insulation. It appears to just be sitting onto of 25mm of blue XPS insulation which...

    Cavity closers under wall plate

Hi, Small single storey extension, got a bricky coming to do the brickwork. Now just thinking about cavity closers, will I need to fit them before I ask the bricky to bed the wall plate? I've assumed using something like this...

    Sour dough bread

I did during lockdown like everyone else, but gave up because it's such a faff.

    Cycle carrier query

I'd recommend a buzz rack. Was about £200 when I got one 5 or 6 years ago. Solid as a rock with 4 bikes on it. Boot access is a problem but with careful planning you can generally get when you need over the back of the rear seats, if you have a hatchback or estate.

It's currently about 18" but will be built full height with new brick and block work.

Best way to insulate a new 50mm cavity wall

Thanks for reply. Building regs don't apply but I want the best performance out of what cavity I've got. It's not a big space so the difference in cost between options isn't really a factor

When does a conservatory become an extension? (and do I need building regs)

Thanks again for the replies. It seems like I can call it a conservatory or a porch with a fairly clear conscious. Conservatory - https://labcfrontdoor.co.uk/projects/conservatories/do-i-need-a-building-regulations-application-for-my-conservatory A conservatory generally has to be constructed...

When does a conservatory become an extension? (and do I need building regs)

Thanks for replies. Its a bit of an aside but we want to keep the door, its a glass sliding door that lets a lot of light through and provides good soundproofing to the rest of the house. We will build to a good spec but will struggle to get to the U values for the walls that only have a 50mm...

When does a conservatory become an extension? (and do I need building regs)

Thanks Jeds. So if I dont connect the heating and I keep the door, I can call it a porch even if its blatantly not a porch? Would I then need to notify BC or can I just crack on? On the flip side, if I call out BC what would they classify it as it? If I called it an extension would they agree...

Best way to insulate a new 50mm cavity wall

Hi, We're building up the walls on our old conservatory footing which means I'm stuck with a 50mm cavity. What is the best way to insulate a 50mm cavity? 25mm celotex on the inner leaf with a 25mm air gap? We will insulate on the inside too. Thanks Miles.

When does a conservatory become an extension? (and do I need building regs)

Hi, I’ve got a conservatory that was built when the house was new 25 years ago. I want to replace it with a more permanent structure, bricking up 3 of the 7 sides, increasing the height of the dwarf wall from knee to waist height and adding a timber framed tiled roof with a vaulted ceiling. We...
