Old Chestnut: Best Way to Apply Water Based Paint Over Oil Based?

Oh my, you do have your work cut out for you with that project. My sympathies. Still, if the wood is wet due to rot, isn't there an abundance of products from the likes of Ronseal and Everbuild to deal with that? Of course, if it's due to rain and ambient humidity, that's summat else... No idea...

Old Chestnut: Best Way to Apply Water Based Paint Over Oil Based?

Forgot to say thanks for all the useful - and scientifically-precise (!) - info, opps. Still not got round to doing more than preparing and filling the crack and chips - one chip takes up most of the bottom rail... I use either Everbuild ready-mixed wood filler - found it surprisingly good for...

Old Chestnut: Best Way to Apply Water Based Paint Over Oil Based?

Thanks, opps. Yes, where rail and stile meet. Otherwise, some are along inner edges of the four recessed panels, but most problem areas are chips, big and small. Yes, that's why I was thinking of using the BIN, because it's solvent-based - sticks well to all kinds of surface and gives a...

Old Chestnut: Best Way to Apply Water Based Paint Over Oil Based?

Is that Dulux Weathershield or similar? Is it water-based or oil?

Old Chestnut: Best Way to Apply Water Based Paint Over Oil Based?

Yes, it's a well-discussed topic but after reading forums, articles and watching vids all over the place, I still can't find a satisfactory answer to this... Front door was painted with oil paint long ago, now there's almost no sheen left on it, it's quite chipped, a little cracked... I want to...

Big Gap Behind New Sash Window Architrave All the Way Around!

What, even though it looks like this? Btw, what's the proper way to fix a gap (seen from outside) that is to one side between lower sash bottom rail and the sill it sits on? Admittedly, the sill is pretty curved/ slanting but don't professional window craftsmen have tricks of the trade to...

Big Gap Behind New Sash Window Architrave All the Way Around!

My window guy coming back next week to do all the bits. Hopefully, all goes well... Would apppreciate your input on a couple of things. What kind of tolerance do you allow for the meeting rails being level, particularly when working on installing new sashes into old frames? There is some amount...

How did you guess so accurately? Blimey!

Big Gap Behind New Sash Window Architrave All the Way Around!

Thank you Notch7 and Blup. Your responses gave me extra courage to insist that the only proper way to resolve this matter was to take off the architrave and add battens all round to make up the depth, which the window guy has agreed to do onsite next week; he was trying to get away with just...

Big Gap Behind New Sash Window Architrave All the Way Around!

Thank you all for your responses. It's a timber sash and the architrave is new. The window installers have their own joinery workshop. I've attached pics of the gap problem. From left to right, there's a side view, a top view and a pic of the window itself. Also, they've supplied a...

Big Gap Behind New Sash Window Architrave All the Way Around!

Just had a complete new double-glazed sash window fitted into our Victorian terrace property. Original window was single-glazed. After being really chuffed at having a beautiful, brand new energy-efficient window, a closer look revealed that the architrave doesn't sit flush on the wall, as you...

    A Filling Loop Story...

Yep... Fitted new valve. Leak gone. No backflow from double check when flexi was disconnected, which is reassuring. Didn't get to use shiny new valve nut though, as old one stuck between olive and pipe bend. Still, satisfying result, however small the job. Thanks! (y)

    A Filling Loop Story...

Thank you one and all for your input. I've not yet had time to do the replacement but I have a shiny new isolation valve with metal lever (first non-plastic one I've seen) from a local plumbing supplies shop that looks the business...

    A Filling Loop Story...

Thanks Nozzle. Just got back from supplies shop with new shut-off valve. I'm pretty certain it's not the compression fitting but will see how it goes... (y)
