Sadly, the 2 other tilers we spoke to agreed that the work is poor quality but weren't prepared to put it in writing. One said he didn't want to criticise a fellow professional, the other didn't want to get involved in such a messy situation.

They actually did use spacers. Just very badly, it seems. Sadly, they've been down for about 3 weeks now, so I reckon they're going to have to order replacement tiles.

Yep, we checked them all for damage before the job, and they're all exactly the same size.

Thank you to all who have replied. We've gone back to thinking that the whole lot needs redoing as we've found a litany of inaccuracies. Most notably, tiles not aligned straight, staircase and gap inconsistencies (as much as 2mm vs 4.5mm). My thinking is that these are all indicators of a poor...
