    Pooling roof leaking

Several things need investigating here.... 1. The roof should NOT leak at this stage. The second coloured coat with GRP protects the first from UV damage and while does strengthen the first coat, the first coat should be water proof in its own right. 2. What is the piece of batten in the right...

    Cladding over render

Hi All During the refurb of our house we will be fitting cladding to the top half and re-rendering the bottom half. The current finish is pretty horrendous render as shown in the picture. As horrible as it is to look at it is all sound and rock hard still so I am loathed to chip it all off and...

    Towel Rail Radiator Feed

Thanks Tigercubrider. I am also envisaging not running the UFH for 6 - 8 months of the year hence putting the towel rail radiators on a separate two way valve and timer so they can call for heat from the boiler separately to the UFH system.

    Towel Rail Radiator Feed

Hi All I am wondering what the recommended way of feeding towel rail radiators is currently, there seems to be a lot of conflicting opinion out there. We will have three radiators in two ensuite and a family bathroom, the rest of the house is heated via underfloor heating. The two options I am...

    Secondary return necessary?

Hi all Re-plumbing a 4 bed, 3 bath house as part of a renovation and I am trying to figure out of a Secondary Return loop is worth the extra work? The longest pipe run from the tank to outlet would be about 18m. If we made up a secondary return loop the total pipe length would be approximately...

Wooden joists attached to RSJ mess

Currently there are X braces made out of 25 x 25mm wood half way along the 3.7m span and no other bracing or noggins anywhere. What amount of bracing or noggins would be appropriate for this span? There are 12 joists at 400mm centres.

Wooden joists attached to RSJ mess

If that method of fitting joists to RSJs is ok then happy days as that is another job off of my list, it just looked a bit bodgy! The span is 3.7m and they are 197 x 47 joists which I am pretty sure falls inside the regs though I have no way of knowing the grade of timber used when it was...

Wooden joists attached to RSJ mess

Thanks for the reply Vinn. Cables are not a concern as the house is being rewired anyway. Are the joists ok fitted into the RSJ like that? Seems like a bodgy way of doing it, should they not be in joist hangers?

Wooden joists attached to RSJ mess

Errrr unfortunately the builders finished this job in 1983 so as much as I would like to get them back I think that ship has sailed! Kinda looking for some practical suggestions to make this right please!

Wooden joists attached to RSJ mess

It creaked a lot and had a ridge where the piece of wood that is on top of the joists is too high

Wooden joists attached to RSJ mess

Hi All I have lifted the floor in our renovation to find the builders have not made a particularly nice job of attaching the joists to the RSJ as you can see in the photograph. Am I correct in thinking the proper way would be with a piece of word infilling the web of the RSJ and joist hangers...
