    Ranch style stair rail replacement

Yes, that's why I'm here. That's what I meant by "alignment issues."

    Ranch style stair rail replacement

Thank you. Odd, I can see three...... so the removal of the central mid-post would have no effect on the integrity/structure of either the staircase or the landing? That's a good start, "all" we have to do is sort out the alignment issues!

    Ranch style stair rail replacement

We've a "ranch-style" staircase we'd like to replace with a conventional handrail/spindle job. How difficult would it be, bearing in mind the narrow gap and the fact we don't want to be swapping / cutting newels. Also, the centre "newel" half way up - what's it for? Extra support for the stairs...

    external tile section in wall

What's behind these tiles? Why did builders use them (cost & speed?) and what problems, if any, are associated with them? About 35 years old, what could I get them replaced with? Don't say wibbly pvc please, is there any solid (or solid looking) replacement for this stuff. Will I have issues...

    roofers rough idea?

Cheers, I'll try and get something useful when it's light but it's up there and I'm down here. Won't see much. Nope, can't see my roof at all from the ground! Sorry. And there are no windows on the low side, just can't get any pictures.

    Washing machine not emptying

see if your pump's blocked. Coins can sometimes get in, but bra underwires are little b***ards for getting in to the impellers. Check to see if your mrs. has one boob lower than the other, if so....that could be your problem! :D

    roofers rough idea?

Hi, we have a house about 8.5mx5m with a single pitch roof that has a valley in it at one end (next door's house is at right angles to ours). We've been told that our tiles would not be allowed in a new build, as the angle is too shallow and there's insufficient overlap, and some are cracked and...

    Durgo or no-go?

Thanks guys, just had an email from Marley saying their 82mm durgo can go as low as 256mm from centre of branch to top of valve. It'll hardly poke it's head above the bathroom floor! Anybody know why Marley stuff is so much dearer than ,say, Floplast? And while I'm here, what's the best...

    Durgo or no-go?

Hi all. I am becoming increasingly confused as to where a Durgo can/can't be used. My bathroom has a 110mm soil pipe running down through the roof, loft, bathroom, cupboard downstairs and into a clay drain in the concrete floor of said cupboard. It then runs out below the front of the...

alternative to drilling the wall to fit a toilet overflow

Many modern cisterns have an internal overflow built into the flush mechanism. Are you sure you need to drill anything? If so, what about changing the flush mech to an internal overflow type.
