I would check your cables particularly the rear pair. These make a lot of difference to the effectiveness of the pug handrake. Other than that they are just a standard design of drum really so shouldnt be any worse than any other drum brake.

Is the zx a petrol or a diesel? I wouldnt recommend using any type of block sealant or gasket sealant products. If you plan on keeping the car you might as well repair it properely. what signs do you have that the headgasket has gone. Are teh oil and water levels dropping, is it overheating.

I am presuming this is a diesel. If so it sounds like the system hasnt been fully bled. I would try bleeding it before changing any parts. Might be worth a phone call to the garage though and see what they sat first though
