Hanging a light fitting from structural beam

Hi all, not sure if I'm posting this in the right category... I want to add a small chandelier type light fitting to hang in the centre of the room. There has never been a light fitting there so there are no cables existing. It is a very old house with exposed wooden structural beams and...

Anti-vac / Antisyphon / Air Admittance Valves - When to use?

Hi, is there any rule of thumb that people go by when installing sink wastes that tells you if you need to install some kind of antisyphon trap or AAV after the trap in your kitchen waste? The majority of sink waste pipes I have seen don't have any kind of device fitted but when I think about...

Standpipe for dishwasher connected to same outlet as sink

I presume the anti-vac is some kind of a valved vent? And I'm guessing that would be fitted after the sink's p-trap?

Standpipe for dishwasher connected to same outlet as sink

Yes, I'm using 40mm pipe and the sink uses that as well. Thanks very much indeed, that's very reassuring.

Standpipe for dishwasher connected to same outlet as sink

Hi, I'm just finishing installing a new kitchen and have put in a new sink and dishwasher which are basically next to each other. I am wondering about the best way to connect the waste hose from the dishwasher. I personally would like best to use a standpipe as i have always found they work...

Builder Depot - anyone have any experience with them?

I'm looking to get several sheets of marine plywood delivered from Builder Depot who are a little cheaper than Jewson, B&Q and Travis Perkins. Any one ever used these people before? http://www.builderdepot.co.uk/

    Occasionally smelly toilet/basin mystery?

Thanks guys you've all been so helpful! So would something like this anti-syphon bottle trap work? http://www.screwfix.com/p/mcalpine-anti-syphon-bottle-trap-32mm-white/37314 And like Nige F suggests, also put in a self sealing waste valve - like this...

    Occasionally smelly toilet/basin mystery?

In my photos does anyone know why the bottom section of the waste pipes are grey plastic (as opposed to white) and also, at the very back, the vertical grey pipe has a grey plastic screwcap on the top of it - what's that for?

    Occasionally smelly toilet/basin mystery?

So you think that trap is the source of the smell? How can you tell? Is it not the right type of trap? Am I correct in thinking that anti-syphoning traps have an air inlet valve after the U-bend? So what kind should I put in?

Here are two photos of under the basin - just so you can see if anything's unusual or suspect?

    Occasionally smelly toilet/basin mystery?

Hi all, For the last few years I've been noticing a sewage smell that sometimes permeates my downstairs toilet. My house has two toilets, (at opposite ends of the house) one in the bathroom and the other in a very small cloakroom. It is the cloakroom that occasionally stinks - most often...
