    old concrete slab foundations query

I had an extension done end of last year - about 3.5m by 5m, but the foundations....... hmm, builder dug down to solid earth.... or not.. got down about 4 / 5 foot and still loose. got the buildings regs blokes in... piling needed. dug out for pile holes and found the 2 foot thick...

    ventilation for integrated fridge freezer?

going to fit a new integrated fridge/freezer over the weekend, but don't really want to fit the ventilation panel in the plinth below, purely for cosmetic reasons. Is there any reason I can't just fit it in the plinth below my range cooker - basically got plinth returns parallel to the sides of...

    Light dims too quickly

aren't the 250w ones rated as 60-250 watt dimmers? in which case won't you have 60 watts minimum; 100 watts max, therefore only a 40 watt range.

cooker hood power rating in watts?

but a spark can do a full check under part p and certify a house (certainly seems to be a possibility for landlords) and so I'm sure he can check that the wires I've fixed and the connections I've made are up to spec and then issue a cert to me (if he is happy to do so) - only like letting...

cooker hood power rating in watts?

anyone got a rough idea of what they consume? I'm wondering if they can be run from the lighting circuit - baumatic curved glass model, with 2 x 50w halogens, rest of lighting circuit (on 6 amp mcb) has 5 ceiling fittings (assuming 100w max each) and 2 of 4x20w halogens, so without the...

ceiling plasterboard ripped for wiring -how to pull back...

....pulled off all the dodgy varnished T&G from my kitchen ceiling to find that the two kitchen light fittings have been wired up from a central point via a channel ripped through the plasterboard alongside a joist. problem is that one side of the plasterboard is fixed nicely to the joist (which...

    plug set alight!

....cut off plug as advised, seems to be fine - have opened the plug to check for any signs of a problem - nonthing at all wrong. Currently have it plugged into an alternative socket that's been checked with a socket tester. The socket that was used is behind a base unit, only accessible from...

too much load on a spur?

must be an overload with a kettle running for a brew with 4 slices in a dualit at the same time from a double socket then surely? or perhaps the tolerances within regs mean that this is "never a problem"??

    plug set alight!

hi, newbie here, reasonably experienced in diy incl electrics, but a mate who's just moved into a new house today has had a problem - plugged his washing machine in, and the plug smouldered and eventually set alight - he switched off at mains (it's got mcb's but they didn't trip?) and...
