Thanks very much for your advice. There is quite a bit of damage though I've knocked a bit of plaster off the wall and further along the wall the insulation is fine. But I'll take out the fuse for the lights and set up some lamps until I can get the electrician.

I've removed the light and there are just 2 wires in their sleeve and an earth wire coming down from the wall now. But thanks for taking the time to post

Hello I smelt burning from a wall light last night so switched it off and removed the fuse that links to it. I called my electrician today but he is away and I'm off on holiday myself tomorrow but have a cat and someone will be coming to my house to feed it so I need the lights switched back...
