    New floor over old

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking for the minimum disruption method really, so I can do it in stages while the room is still in partial use (I know, I know...) Sounds like covering it with 6mm then laying the floor over it is the way to go here as it's a first-floor room and chipboard over...

Recommendations for spray painting metal steps

You can probably "make good and paint" using this stuff: http://www.baileypaints.co.uk/industrial/bailey-paints/topcoat/high-build-air-drying-ac-enamel-4950-line/ It's high build anti-corrosive paint, so it will stop the rust and also covers really well, and should go on fine without...

    Cleaning and keying with scotchbrite?

Yep, Tak Rags or Tack Cloths - search on ebay for them reasonably cheap. They are just cloths impregnated with a glue that grabs and holds all the dust. I also use a hoover connected to the sander to catch most of it as I go, and a dust buster for dust from drilling.

MDF, Priming, Undercoat, Emulsion and gloss question

It depends on whether you have any edges of the MDF to paint, or whether it's just flat smooth faces. I just did some shelves which were new 25mm moisture resistant MDF, and I gave them 1 coat of watered down white acrylic primer (about 65/35 paint to water) on the faces. I also gave the raw...

    New floor over old

Thanks for the reply. Forgive me - I'm just not really sure of the purpose of lining it before new flooring goes down, as it's basically a solid, sound surface - I just don't like the look of it. I also don't want to add too much extra depth either. Would there be a reason I couldn't just...

Recommendations for wood and skirting (white paint)

Yep, Satinwood in my house too. Easy to work with, self undercoating and really nice finish. Make sure you get Trade as opposed to the normal stuff, as it will cover a lot better. Look up your local Dulux centre to get hold of it, or somewhere like Brewers or any other paint supplier.

    Painting internal doors.

Use Dulux Trade Satinwood with a decent brush and you can't go wrong! It's pretty forgiving stuff and handles really nicely, and it covers really well, so you can often get away with just one coat over the old paint.

Dulux satinwood / underside of shelves

I did the underside of some shelves this week with Satinwood and it was fine. The only thing to watch for is edges where paint could gather and drip, as this did happen to me. The shelves have some large holes in the backs of a couple of them, and I didn't keep a good enough eye on them when...

    Tips painting mock tudor house

If it's the actual wood that's damaged, and it's dry and otherwise sound, then a bit of 2-pack filler would repair any holes etc, and will go off in the cold a lot quicker than something water based. Once dry it can be sanded with the rest of the woodwork, as you say, with your detail sander...

    Tips painting mock tudor house

Can you post a pic of the damage - quite hard to suggest how to fix it without seeing what the damage looks like.

Filling gap in block paved drive

No, it's not a depression, it's an actual unfilled gap in the brickwork. Not sure why it's been left, but on old pics of the house it's just got grass growing on it. I just want to fill in this area to remove the doorstep quagmire!

    New floor over old

Hi all. I have a hideous parquet floor in my front room which is about 8mm deep and appears to be fixed straight to the chipboard floor underneath it (there could be a layer of latex in there possibly too). My question is, can I simply lay a new floor (engineered wood or similar) straight...

Mixing paint to make the colour stronger.

If it's water based paint, pretty much any other water based paint should mix with it fine, so whatever dark colour you have a dreg of in the shed will mix. I would suggest pouring off a small amount into a pot (enough to do the strip) and adding in a little bit of a dark colour at a time to see...

Spray Painting - Which Dulux trade paint?

It varies from paint to paint, so the best thing I can suggest is getting a couple of measuring cups and starting with something like 500ml paint, and 50ml water. Give it a test spray, and see how it behaves. Assuming you have a 1L cup, you have room to add more paint or water to either thicken...

Spray Painting - Which Dulux trade paint?

Most things water-based will go through the paint sprayer fine, diluted roughly the same as you did with the white emulsion. I've used water-based eggshell through an HVLP with success, as well as emulsions and vinyl matts etc, but I would definitely use trade paint as opposed to diy store...
