    Ring Main that isn't

Spot on JohnD and Spacecat. The problem was exactly as you say - Neutral-Earth short caused by chaffed insulation presumably due to no grommet on the original box. Fortunately, there was a very short cable run to the next socket and I was able to replace the cable - everything is now working...

    3 cable Ring Main??

Hi BS3036, Extend it? Do you mean back to the CU? If I did that would it need to be on a different circuit breaker? Cheers, R.

    3 cable Ring Main??

Hmm... does that mean I HAVE to disconnect it? I have a spare slot on the CU - should I make a new circuit just for those two sockets? Thanks again, R.

    Ring Main that isn't

Hi Lectrician, Its an MCB that trips - the one for the socket circuits. When I test for continuity at the socket, I have continuity between all wires - L-L, L-N, L-E. Can this be right? Hi Securespark, The cables don't look damaged, but I guess that's still possible. I'm definitely...

    3 cable Ring Main??

Sorted - the extra cable feeds two sockets in the Lounge, next door to the garage where the CU is. This was done before we moved in. At least I know what its for! Thanks for the tips. However......... //www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1244433#1244433

    Ring Main that isn't

I'm replacing a single socket in the Dining Room with a double socket - sounds easy? When I unscrewed the existing socket (having isolated the ring) I noticed that one of the Neutral wires was loose - but thought nothing of it. I disconnected the socket, removed the single box, chased out the...

    3 cable Ring Main??

Thanks for the V.rapid responses! What I intend to do then is to disconnect one cable at a time and test all my sockets to see which ones are affected - can I just disconnect the live wire or do I need to disconnect the corresponding neutral as well? Many thanks for your help.

    3 cable Ring Main??

I noticed that the circuit breaker for the mains sockets has 3 cables connected to it. I thought that if there was one it was a radial circuit, and two if it was a ring main. So what does it mean if there are 3? Cheers.

    Shower Pump options

Well that also makes sense - thank you. Actually our power shower does give a really good flow - it pumps both hot and cold water and is not an instantaneous electric shower, which I agree are usually rubbish. So my options are to install a new pump close to the tank, or take a feed off my...

    Shower Pump options

Hi Richard C - that makes snese to me - thanks for the explanation - much appreciated. It still makes me wonder though, why it is OK to have power shower, which also has a pump, located so far form the tank. Don;t these units also suffer from the same problems you describe? Sorry to keep...

Thanks Richard C - but why must be within 2m, and what goes wrong if its further away?

    Shower Pump options

Hi, I currently have a power shower located in an en-suite bathroom – approx 5 metres from the hot water tank. I want to replace the existing shower enclosure with a fully enclosed Shower Cabin, so I have to replace the power shower. My intention was to install a new dual-feed pump in the...
