Heard banging outside my bedroom window at 07:15 this morning - two hours later, all done. I had to sign some sort of form allowing OFTEC to come and inspect it, so I assume all in order - certainly looks OK to my uneducated eye.

Umm... he said they'd lay 3 concrete lintels on the existing base, and put the tank on that? In what ways do you think the base would be inadequate? Seems to have kept the existing tank flat & level for 30 years...

Yes the guy who did the survey didn't highlight anything except the drain nearby, necessitating a bunded tank. Got too more quotes, both more than the first one - so I've given them the go ahead. Will report back when done :giggle:

OK, realise nobody can answer this for me so, having thought hard about it, I don't want the hassle of getting gas in (they ruined my next door neighbour's block paved driveway), so new tank it is. Now I've only got one quote so far - £2145 inc VAT to supply and fit a new tank, remove the old...

Yeah... been (fairly) reliably informed that oil is a bit cheaper, and of course if you time it right you can fill the tank when the price drops :unsure:

About a year ago, they put gas into our street, and I was seriously tempted. Now my oil tank is close to end of life, so time to decide… I have an oil boiler which was installed new 8 years ago, serviced every year, provides good heat. It’s on a vented system, which I see no reason to change...

Thanks guys - it seems to have come back OK for now. Gave a few big coughs first, like the kitchen taps, so I guess the water board have been doing something, and a bit of air in the system :rolleyes:

While in the bathroom earlier today, I briefly heard a great bubbling noise from somewhere - couldn't locate it before it stopped. Then while using the kitchen tap, it spat and spurted for a while before normal service was resumed. I assumed the water company had been doing something, so...

Thanks Terry. Yes if nothing went wrong I guess I could manage the float valve - think this one looks a bit like one I used in previous houses, from SF... The crack is behind the wodge of plumber's mate or whatever it is at the top right of the last photo, running down the side of the cistern...

This lavatory has been here since the house was built 30 years ago, but I’ve only been here a few years, and am gradually repairing/replacing things. As you can see, the inside of this cistern is filthy, and my efforts to clean it have failed. It works OK, but I think it smells a bit… Anyway...

See, that's EXACTLY the sort of thing that wouldn't occur to me till it was too late. And I do need to park fairly close to it, so roller it is...
