    New socket spur, different room?

Hi DIYer here. I've previously added a socket to a room by using a fused spur from an existing socket and burying the cable in the wall horizontally between them. I believe I did a good job there of obeying the rules around where to run the cables and how to complete the install. I'm now...

External power to 12v CCTV camera

The cameras aren't with me right now, so I might be wrong about the outdoor claims of them. They were cheap and probably not ideal for the job - having an easily removable power plug isn't the best security system anyway! But the question remains, for a 12v camera how would one hard-wire the...

External power to 12v CCTV camera

I've got a couple of WiFi CCTV cameras that are weatherproof. They came with adaptors that plug into regular plug sockets. If I wanted to mount these outdoors I would not want to run the cable from an indoor plug socket and through a hole in the wall to the camera - and I'm pretty sure that...

    Correct cable size?

OK, thank you all very much. I think I will go with 2.5mm cable spur to an FCU. Then 2.5mm cable from the FCU to feed 2 double sockets. I think we've said that was OK. I'll run the cable just behind the plasterboard, following safe zones - horizontal from and to sockets.

    Correct cable size?

Will 13A be enough for my TV and all the junk that goes alongside it? Or, is this 4mm spur option going to give me more capacity?

    Correct cable size?

Going on other replies it seems I'm not the only one to think that sounded crazy. I'm sane after all!

    Correct cable size?

That sounds crazy, but then I'm well aware that I'm quite naive about the complexity of the regs. I'm an intelligent person and I'm always impressed with the technical knowledge (and application of it) that many electricians on these forums display. I think I'd enjoy it as a career, but that's...

    Correct cable size?

That is, rather than run a 4mm cable for the spur on its own, use 2.5mm to spur into a 13A FCU which then feeds 2 sockets from 2.5mm cable? That would work too. I don't understand the pros/cons of each approach.

    Correct cable size?

I'm eternally grateful for your help. That approach will satisfy my needs, and abilities. I'm just a little concerned that it might be a contentious approach.

    Correct cable size?

To extend the ring in my room, I don't believe I'll be able to do it without using junction boxes of some sort. This is because the wall I'm extending onto doesn't currently have any sockets so I'd have to run cable back to the new socket position, and then all the way past the existing socket...

    Correct cable size?

I was hoping to install 2 double sockets - because it's to supply a TV unit which will have TV, Sky box, PS4, WiFi Router, Soundbar, Xbox and maybe a couple of other things. I was hoping to minimise the use of multigang extensions leads. So, to do a spur the single new cable would be twisted...

    Correct cable size?

Thanks for the extra info. I'm making some sense of this but I'm pretty sure what I was thinking of doing was actually a spur - that is, run a single cable from an existing socket to the new socket(s). In order to extend the ring I would need to take the feed to the existing socket and instead...

    Correct cable size?

Ah, it seems what you're saying is that when I am "extending a ring" then I should use the same diameter of cable as is already in use - which would probably be 2.5mm² for the majority of domestic socket circuits? I wasn't aware of that, so I'm glad I checked. I don't have a particular problem...

    Correct cable size?

Further to this post: //www.diynot.com/diy/threads/adding-a-plug-socket-round-a-corner.467371/ I still intend to DIY extend the ring circuit and add 2 double sockets side by side behind my TV. My plan is to run the cable horizontally from an existing socket. The length is about 50cm from...

Adding a plug socket - round a corner

Which would make it possible to run the cable 50mm below the finished surface...This is interesting to learn.
