What's the easiest way to remove cement off the bricks ??

Yes, want to keep the bricks, but some are covered in cement.... Brick faces.... House is 135yrs old. Would rather clean and paint, but would the cement painted look bad?. thanks for replying.... opinions always help me greatly, going solo without ADVISE is very daunting...
