    Washing Machine motor brush wear

Thank you. That does make sense. The ticking (accompanied by sparking) only happens when the brushes are failing to make proper contact. Also I did try to wipe clean the commutator but didnt notice anything obvious. Maybe just a small unevenness is enough to wear down the brushes??

    Washing Machine motor brush wear

18 months ago our fairly old Siemens washing machine started making ticking sounds and the drum turning motion became intermittant. I traced this to worn motor brushes and replaced them. Just over a year later the same thing happened and the brushes were again worn right down and I replaced them...

    Shower pump wont run continuously

Thank you. The pump filters are both clean. Do you mean the pipe from the hot water cylinder to the pump? The cylinder has been changed since this problem occurred and this had no affect on tyhe problem. Also wouldnt flow on the cold side keep the pump running in any case?

    Shower pump wont run continuously

I will have to check how the expansion pipe is fitted, but as only one of the pump's flow switches needs to be engaged, wouldnt the cold side flow keep the pump running?

    Shower pump wont run continuously

I agree it seems like the reed switches are dropping out, but I cannot understand how this can be happening. The natural flow on the cold side is pretty good. You could almost take a cold shower under this flow alone. Not so on the hot side where there is very little natural flow. In practice...

    Shower pump wont run continuously

I have a 2-bar pumped shower (Water Mill pump) fed from a large cold water tank in the loft and the hot water cylinder in an upstairs room. The pump is located at the base of the hot water cylinder. Pipework is plastic 22mm routed up and over to a thermostatic shower mixer (with 22mm inlets and...

    Loft insulation

//media.diynot.com/24000_23671_42296_83250404_thumb.jpg See above. Can I block the fresh air entering the loft area by extending the rafter insulation down to floor level?

    Loft insulation

Okay, thank you. I understand that. But can you comment on the remaining question of whether sealing off the rafter space with an air gap and vapour barrier would cause any condensation or other issue (apart from waste of money etc).

    Loft insulation

There is some insulatiuon under the boarded up loft floor, just not the recommended thickness. The entire floor space is used for storage and the area is freezing cold in the winter and boiling hot in the summer. What exactly would be the problem in insulating the roof down to floor level? Isnt...

    Loft insulation

Thank you. I take your point, but I would still be interested in whether it would cause condensation problems if I insulate the roof right down to floor level thus stopping outside air from entering the loft space.

    Loft insulation

I would like to nail insulation horizontally across the sloping roof joists in the loft together with a vapour barrier. There will be a free space between the joists and under the insulation for outside air to circulate. This is instead of placing insulation on the loft floor as this is used for...

    Air in Shower system?

The cold water feed from the tank is about 60cm above the highest point in the pipes from the pump. The shower head in its highest position is about 1m below the cold water feed. The pump always switches on when the shower is turned on. It just has these momentary interruptions which seem to...

    Air in Shower system?

Sounds like a plan. Except that the pump instructions say; "Do not fit non-return valves in the inlet line to the pump. The pump must be able to vent back to the supply tank" Therefore is it okay to fit a check valve in the pump outlet...
