My son's now bought a Makita DHP489.

It was exactly the same motor from another Makita.

Got given a used motor from another drill and have installed this, drill now working.

I would definitely get the structural changes properly checked out and rectified.

What structural elements has he removed?

My son's Makita combi drill dhp453 about 2 years old started smoking and got really hot. I took it apart and found the following metal bits in the case as shown in image. I presume they are from the motor?
