Single skin or double skin front porch - please advise.

Thanks for the reply. Regarding building regs, I mentioned it in case someone said it had to be cavity wall, not because I didn't want to build it well etc... As much as some regs are a pain, they are generally quite sensible.

Single skin or double skin front porch - please advise.

Hi, I have planning permission to build a front porch with external dimensions of 2400mm x 2100mm. I am not allowed anything larger. Building regs don't apply. It will be built out of block and then externally rendered. Now my question is should I build it single skin or build a...

    Which foundations ?

Have you considered making it from timber, say 4 x 2's or even 6 x 2's. Much lighter and you will be able to insulate it far better. Easier to do it your self too. I did a timber outbuilding which is classed as "temporary" and so planning wasn't even an issue etc.. I made the corners...

Soakaway - How big do I have to build it?

Thanks for the replies I must admit to being a bit confused. What surprises me about these rubble filled soakaways, is that they don't actually meet the volume requirements from what I can see. It seems that the true soakaway volume of a rubble filled hole is only about 30% of the size of...

Soakaway - How big do I have to build it?

Hi, I need to build a soakaway for our extension/rebuild but I am unsure how big it needs to be. Our roof area at the front is approximately 41.5 sq mtr. I can't seem to quite understand the calculation. Do I just divide by 40 which would mean the soakaway needed is just over 1 cubic metre...

How close to the Approved Plans do you have to be?

Hi Richard, What would "normal" building tolerances be for something of the sizes I mentioned above? Are we talking just millimetres or perhaps a few centimetres? Any idea? Cheers.

How close to the Approved Plans do you have to be?

Here's a general interest question: How close do you have to be to the Approved Plans, when building something? Basically I have permission to build a rear extension and a front porch. The approved plans of the rear extension, as close as I can tell, are 6.1 mtr x 6.3 mtr The...

Building a front Porch - Please offer a newbie some guidance

Many thanks for all your replies. They are very helpful. Had a quick chat with Building Control and they say it isn't subject to regs provided I keep an external door on the existing house entrance. Yeee Haaa!!! I sound like a cowboy. No I'm not a cowboy builder ;-) By the way, I had no...

Building a front Porch - Please offer a newbie some guidance

Hello Everyone, I have planning permission to build a porch of 2mtr x 2.5mtr onto the front of my Bungalow. The existing house will retain its external door and there will be no heating in the porch, or perhaps a separate small controllable heater maybe. Anyway, I really want to have a...
