Ok, have the SH1 hopper but it's not a tight fit - should it be? Do I need a new coupling?

I've jumped in at the deep end any broken up my old concrete patio in preparation for putting down some paving slabs instead. Lots of rocks left in the base (all the really big stuff in the skip), can someone advise the next step - MOT, sand or sand+cement mix to level it? Or something else...
