Thanks, I'll have a look at those.

Fair enough, to a point. How do you know that any certification mark printed on a box or product is fake or real? And perhaps 'oh dear....' might not have been the most useful response you could have given earlier on if there was a bigger point you wanted to make. Was that intended for others...

    Outside light replacement

Waiting for an answer from the seller, but other people have asked the question on Amazon and the seller has confirmed the warranty is valid. Yes, it's in China - not a great shock given that's where most electrical stuff comes from! The light is being fulfilled by Amazon so all warranty...

Thanks for your responses so far. The fitting is this one, IP65 apparently. Seems very well-made and strong having unpacked it today. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01M30R0EI/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    Outside light replacement

Hi there, I would be really grateful for some advice please. I currently have a very old, very rusted, high wattage halogen floodlight on the rear of my house. It does not have a PIR and is switched from inside the house (as one of a 3-gang switch that also controls normal kitchen lighting). I...

New ceiling light fitting - I have no earth!

Well, it's all gone swimmingly after all your great advice. Got a nice earth continuity using the resistance within the suggested figures and also did a basic audible circuit continuity test for sake of completeness and the buzzer in my multimeter sounded happily. Now got our new light fitted...

New ceiling light fitting - I have no earth!

Folks, sorry, is the resistance reading meant to be zero or just very low as each of you said something slightly different! I've just tested my multimeter with an extension lead by setting it to the minimum resistance setting (200ohm) and then connecting the probes between the earth terminals...

New ceiling light fitting - I have no earth!

Nice one. Just found an extension lead that has a non-moulded plug so just about to take the plug off and connect to the void earth and then use the earth terminal on the socket end to connect the meter through. Will use a terminal block as suggested to ensure connection is good.

New ceiling light fitting - I have no earth!

Ok understand that now. Can see how you use an extension lead (it was the bit about taking the plug off that I couldn't see). So, given that there is no power involved anywhere, will any piece of cable do to make the loop? I suspect I've got a few metres of something knocking about somewhere -...

New ceiling light fitting - I have no earth!

Confused now! I understood it that I connected a flying lead to the earth I found in the ceiling, then the other end to one probe of the meter, and the other probe to the MET. But I don't understand where I can use an extension lead - do I need to connect that to the earth in the ceiling...

New ceiling light fitting - I have no earth!

Hi Phil/River, Thanks for this advice. To be honest I kind of prefer the method Phil suggests (no offence intended River). I think I can see the MET (looks like a large chunky piece of terminal block fixed to the board where the meters/fusebox are attached to, can see a couple of different...

New ceiling light fitting - I have no earth!

Update - just found an earth cable tacked up on the side of the beam in the ceiling. Just couldn't see it from where I was looking up into the ceiling but stuck my phone camera up into the hole and took a few shots in different directions and there it was about a foot away!. It's been left with...
