Out of curiosity, can you give a few examples of an acrylic bonding agent - something like SBR ?

Zinsser peel stop is the product you need - as its name suggests, it stops paint peeling. misterhelpful is right by saying that the ceiling wasn't given a mistcoat, and his advice about sorting it out may well work but if not then get some peel stop.

If you are suffering from brush marks then maybe you need to try adding some xim or floetrol and a splash of water - different brushes may also be worth a go too ! It does take a little practice to get used to WB paints - they may not give the high sheen of an OB gloss but I find that WB paint...

If you are only going to use it occasionally then a corded one might be worth thinking about as batteries do need to be used, ie charged and discharged from time to time or they will loose their ability to hold a charge. However, I say this without experience as it has never happened to me...

Oh yes..! I did detail it all, with links to show what things like 123 cost. Too many times I have allowed £15 for some paint forgetting that the days of £15 a gallon paint are long gone..

Zinsser make some of the best primers as far as I know, so I would suggest something like 123 plus or if you can stand the smell, coverstain. Both are excellent products, 123 plus is water based so smells less and some say it isn't as good as Coverstain - I think I agree, but for your job 123...

I should have added that I now use xim latex extender more as floetrol has gone stringy once or twice. As dcdec says, just add to what paint you put into your kettle - I use about 20-25mm per litre roughly, but it is more a 'how-it-feels' thing - you sort of know when paint is the right...

I am not an expert in F and B paints but have heard that their paints work best as a system - ie use their undercoat. From my experience of painting kitchen units I would also suggest giving a proper clean with Krud Kutter or meths and then priming with Zinsser coverstain - this may be overkill...

I use it in acrylic trim paint, but never felt the need to use it in emulsion as diluting it with water does the job. It does as it claims - helps reduce brushmarks and keeps the wet edge longer so is worth the cost for me. The only downside is the extra cost but as I said, it is worth it for me.

Cheers Tony - the chimney is not connected to any other walls so seems to be non structural or at least not holding anything else up ! Why is it all so complicated ? The house is a 1930's solid concrete block built place if that makes much difference...
