Hi all,
I have this rather sorry looking lantern in the porch. The paint is shot and some of the metal is exposed. No visible rust that I have found.
I'd like to take it down and re-paint it in black. Rather than botch the job and then come asking for help I thought I should ask how to get...
Hi all,
I have a wooden front door that desperately needs some attention. It's probably the original door from 1929 and seems to be finished with a brushed on stain. It may have been varnished but if so it's certainly not easy to tell now.
I'd like some advice please on how to best prepare...
Thought you might all like to know that I'm now a happy bunny - the plumber installed a new Gundfos pump and all the rads get very hot and the house now gets lovely and warm very quickly. I feel like I'm getting my monies worth out of having a new boiler now. Thanks all for the help.
Thanks to all for the replies - much appreciated. That's answered my original queries and tells me that the quote for a new pump from the local firm who replaced the boiler is reasonable.
Another question though - do pumps tend to work at full speed then suddenly fail, or run slower and...
I think that my current British Gas branded central heating pump in the airing cupboard needs replacing. Recently we had the boiler replaced and ever since the bearings have sounded noisy. Yesterday it stopped pumping on speed setting 3 but restarted instantly when I switched it to 2. A couple...
We have a 'normal' (not combi) vented heating and hot water system with a cylinder in the airing cupboard, and F+E tank in the loft. A week ago we had our boiler replaced, the 'H section' air separator in the airing cupboard removed, and system power flushed. All seemed well after installation...
Hi, I'm working on stripping my wooden bannisters which were gloss painted by previous occupants - a crime I reckon! I've got reasonably far but I need some expert advice on two tricky bits.
Here is a general photo of the bannisters in their current unfinished state:
The first...
Sorry to dig up an old thread but I found a solution to this that might help someone else.
The solution was to remove plastic caps from the bottom side of the hinges which allowed me to use allen keys to adjust each hinge individually. By doing this I was able to pull each door in and up a...
Thanks for that tip, JohnD. I've read all the information on their site and had a look at the Boiler Buddy too. Very interesting products! I want to get a new boiler within the next year or so and it seems that it wouldn't hurt at all to get one of these now. I'm wondering if it'll do away with...
BG have been and the bloke said that there is a blockage in the pipework by the air separator which he detected using a magnet. Apparently the air separator slows the water flow down and deposited sludge and metal deposit can then bung the pipework up. The fix is to cut out the pipework and...

Luckily it seems my legendary fiscal tightness didn't stop me from signing up to British Gas Homecare 200 which seems to cover this. An engineer is coming tomorrow afternoon. Until then... cold showers.
Thanks for the assistance. Much appreciated!
I had a look in this thread: //www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16112 So it seems that my tank is an expansion tank and it may be possible that the boiler stat has gone? Is this a good guess?
Another symptom I noticed recently is that the central heating doesn't seem to turn off as...
>> that tank you say is hot should be cold.
Eek! It's very hot - too hot to touch the ballcock.
Out of interest, what is the purpose of that tank then?
>> sounds like your system is pumping over.
What is 'pumping over'?
>> is the hot water comming out the copper pipe that is...
