Thanks for all the help chaps, managed to find the specs online and got the system up and running. Took the controller box apart, cleaned up the connections and rebuilt it. I now have lovely hot water and central heating and it cost me zero pounds. am a very happy man

I do think its the controller box under the tank thats the problem, as you do have to tap it to get the boiler to fire up. if it is, its probaly better to replace the control units and the thermostat?
