I spoke to Building control again and they said that I can sort of pre-apply by emailing them an outline of the job with anticipated u-values etc. I am hoping it may be not too difficult to treat it as a single job over a few months

So I started to fill out the form for the first room and they want a £180 fee... does this sound normal? The cost of the work is going to be about £300... If I carry out the work room by room how I want to it will cost £540 in council fees...

Having just put up a dado for the first time, I would second going for a scribe on that - you can always take off more gradually to get it to fit. I also found that drawing on the wall helped and using a sliding bevel made everything easier for the inclines.

Thanks for your replies - I have made a temporary fix by using a pine plank and beading that is pretty tight to the conduit. Gas pipes have wire wool around them. This way I figure that if they chew through the wood at least I know for sure where they are coming in from. I am going to put in...
