Good call, now had 3 days of rattle free boiler use!!! probably jinxed that with this reply LOL.
Didn't need to use anything more abrasive than some descaler and my finger nail ! regreased and reassembled piece of Pxxx.

Don't suppose it makes any difference but is the problem due to poor boiler design or a poor quality part ie a return spring? or do particular installations suffer due to environmental or other circumstances?
My boiler was installed as a replacement but the system was not flushed and problems...
Its a good idea but would use a piece of hard wood dowl instead much safer especially where electricity is involved. I've seen mechanics use the technique to isolate rattles in engines.

And happen to agree with this diagnosis, I will give it a try as the boiler was reasonably quiet for a few years except when scale was a problem.
