    Floor level and thresholds advice

Most times that I've seen ceramic tiles installed over a plank floor the fitters have installed a layer of ply first then tiled on top of this. The ply makes a rigid base for the tiles, if there is any flex in the subfloor then the tiles will crack or the grout will keep breaking up. The...

Hole in new carpet, shall i demand a complete replacement?

Is it a hole right thru to the underlay or is it tufts/yarn missing and you can see the backing material? If a hole then go for a replacement as its in a main walk area, unless the allowance amount is tempting, but don't forget joins are put in walk areas and last the life of the carpet. If...

"Gas" smell coming up from floorboards

Is the outlet / exhaust / vent from your boiler under the window of the room with the painted floor? I know our vent smells of gas when the winds in the right direction - it may have something to do with that.

Installed laminate floor over parquet floor - huge mistake!

Not sure if I was clear enough - I ment that you don't put any form of dpm on top of the parquet. As matty says there must already be a form of dpm under the parquet or it would have done a good impression of a mexican wave (good practice for sking on moguls but thats about it).

    18mm x 120mm oak floor

Customer supplied the flooring from Howdens. Well packaged in sealed boxes and on first glance looked good. Wasn't till I started laying that I noticed the descrepencies. Called customer, he said just do your best (would have prefered it if he sent it back). Brand on boxes was "Timberjack"

Laid the lounge / diner today. A real pain in the butt, the widths varied by 3mm (118.5 min to 121.5 max). I wish i hadn't sold my pergo straps 6 mths ago. Back to fit skirtings 2moro

Installed laminate floor over parquet floor - huge mistake!

If there was a dpm or combi underlay used on top of the existing floor it can cause it to "sweat" which will make it expand and swell and can result in causing the laminate to lift.

First timer laying a floating solid wood oak floor questions

Check if you are allowed to install wood / laminate flooring first. In some flats they are not allowed because of the noise. Worth checking so you don't waste money.

Landscaping a Slope/Hill In Back Garden

Have a look thru some of the pictures in the link below ( gardens which have been landscaped using railway sleepers - gave me inspiration for my own garden). http://www.railwaysleeper.com/Customers%20ideas,%20photos%20and%20projects.htm

    18mm x 120mm oak floor

Got a lounge/diner to lay the above flooring in, its 9.50 x 3.70m - arch 5.00m from one end. Existing floor is 15 years old and has marley tiles on (no damp reading on protimeter). What do you think - too big to float, use elastilon or rip up existing, screed, dpm, prime, screed and bond.
