Hey Woody.
Chiming in here again as Deluks has raised this thread on my behalf as he will be on top of the ladder in this project, so to speak.
The wall is wobbly because the entire garage was originally a carport, which the owners enclosed at some point some time ago by building up with...
Deluks - all I can say is thanks for trying to keep this on track - you have proven to be extremely helpful and friendly.
It is a pity there is no end to the sort of people on incredibly helpful forums like this one who are intent on bashing rather than assisting, slapping sense into all us...
@ Static and Deluks --- thank you both VERY much, you have been a great help.
If I may ask one final question before I leave this thread in the clutches of the archives:
Are we still talking about the concept of supporting a horizontal member on the corner posts (additional vertical support...
Thanks for that.
Yes, the existing rafters are spaced way too far apart and I can only assume this was because of the original notion of supporting a lightweight plastic roof.
And yes, it is a single skin 4" block wall, which is why I am concerned.
I think I might look at 2 x new joists...
As per usual - difficult to describe the problem without actually seeing it, but here goes:
I have an attached garage which is 6m long and 3.3m wide and it runs along the side of the house so that one of the 6m walls is the house wall.
Joists run across the width of the garage - with a very...
Hi there - sorry for the delay in responding, off feet at work yesterday!
Yes, will be blocking up behind the main doors as well as the single door into the backyard --- but there is a door leading into the kitchen which will left in place (beefed up with 4 x layers 18mm MDF and a layer or...
Well, well, well ... a chip and a putt from me then --- I am in Banstead.
Wouldn't mind giving you a ring at some point to chat about the constant compromises and crossed fingers if you have a 20 minute window sometime?
I am all over the place at the moment with this garage - cold roof vs warm...
Don't forget the dedicated Didgeridoo isolation booth!
Nah - I actually have a vast collection of older school kit, although I do record to hard disk --- but stubbornly refusing to submit to the world of plugins, so use PC (Cubase SX-3 with 16 analogue in 32 analogue out soundcards)...
Right - so air drawing across ceiling void only? Is there no need to try to induce air to draw from ground/floor level?
Or is this covered by the theory of the damp on the floor eventually evaporating due to the warmth of the insulation in the void between the original walls and the inner...
Aha - now that might be someting to investigate.
So rather than having "natural" breeze/airflow ventilation, you will be forcing the flow with a fan?
Hmmmm - surely a massive saving on the £1500 (materials alone) for my warm roof plan.
Where would these fans be pulling air from though -...
I am about to turn my garage flat roof into a "Warm Roof" (I have a seperate thread discussing this task in the Roofing section) with the primary goal of having no ventilation whatsoever, as I will be building a decoupled room inside this sealed garage shell to use as a music/recording studio -...
Fair point and I will look into this.
One question, when you mention "going over the face of the rafters", do you mean the vertical face, so that each rafter is kind of wrapped in insulation as such?
Rafters are 150mm x 50mm.
Thanks
Steve
