Hi all,
I got some great advice here on how to insulate our bay window here, so I thought I would share a step by step guide on how I approached the project. May it help someone in the future! It's made a massive difference.
We've removed lining paper in our Victorian terrace to uncover lime plaster as shown in the photo. It's largely intact, but covered in tiny cracks and with numerous areas that feel hollow to the tap (though are clearly sounds enough that they didn't come off with the lining paper). One patch...
Thanks! I decided to go for it with the removal. There was a thick (~8cm) deep chunk of plaster above the cill that the window board was resting on, then it was glued onto the frames at the back as you said. Came off easily once the plaster was gone!
I'm going to add timber to the gap left...
I've got rid of some of the plaster underneath and the window board appears to extend in beneath the window surrounds so I don't think its an easy remove. The insulation I'm adding is going to stick out further than the current window boards - any suggestions on how to extend them if I can't...
I'm in the process of insulating my bay window. I've been taking the plaster off back to brick and want to remove the plastic window board and replace with wood. Can anyone advise how these are attached to the main window frame? I want to be sure it's actually removable before I damage it...
I'm removing some plaster on our rear external wall and want to know what type of Plaster it is. It seems to have a thin rigid white surface then powdery grey texture behind. Mainly keen to know it's not hazardous!
Thanks :)
Cheers, I'd seen that thread and that was basically what I pulled my plan together on - I was just unsure whether the timber framing was necessary if it didn't already exist and whether I should be removing the plaster or leaving it.
Great, thanks! I don't think the current stuff is plasterboard - it's pink all the way through and has a stoney texture where I've chipped some off and looks pretty well adhered to the bricks in behind!
Thanks! Is the foam strong enough to hold the plasterboard on? I've never used it!
Good to know about the overboard. I was hoping to replace with a nicer wooden board provided I can get the existing one off...
We’ve just pulled off the lining paper under the bay window (1st floor) in our bedroom to discover a huge amount of black mould. The wall under the bay is plastered over brick. I’ve chipped some of this away where the mould was particularly bad and it’s nice and dry behind, so I’m confident this...
A belated update to help anyone in future - really no problem in the main downpipe going straight into the water butt provided the overflow can cope as pointed out by @Mr Chibs . Actually has the advantage of sediment etc from the gutters getting filtered out in there rather than going straight...
Thanks - given the pipe to the washing machine is already there it isn't that much effort to just switch the isolator for a tee to get unrestricted flow
Hi all,
I'm looking to install an outside tap on our small outbuilding. I've done a bit of DIY plumbing but am no expert! There's already a washing machine out there, so there's a copper pipe coming from the kitchen terminating in an isolator that the washing machine hose screws into. I want...
